New Resource Center in Delray Aims to Reduce School-Related Stress

NEW RESOURCE CENTER IN DELRAY AIMS TO REDUCE SCHOOL-RELATED STRESS

Workshops, Lending Library, Trainings & Programs Target Family Engagement, Mental Health

DELRAY BEACH, FL -- This fall, students, parents, educators, administrators, mental and behavioral health providers have a new resource to help them succeed in school: The Parent Educator Resource Center (PERC). Operated by the Community Classroom Project, the PERC offers workshops for families, a lending library on mental health and learning-related topics, continuing education courses for educators and providers, as well as office hours and coaching programs to tackle the problem of school-related stress. Details and program schedules can be found at www.ccpdelray.org.

“So often, there are signs that a student needs help, but people don’t know where to begin to get them what they need,” says Ali Kaufman, founder of the Community Classroom Project. “We’re bringing as many resources as we can together in one place to remove the stigmas and barriers-to-care around mental health, learning differentiation, and the struggles that families face just to get homework done and dinner on the table each night.”

The PERC is the first program to launch from the Community Classroom Project, a brand new nonprofit organization in Delray Beach on the campus of Space of Mind, a social homeschooling program that Kaufman also founded. CCP’s mission is to rethink current approaches in education and reduce school-related stress by bridging the gap between students, parents, educators, schools, and the community. To achieve this goal, CCP is starting by addressing the need for greater understanding and strategies around learning, family engagement and mental health.

“Statistics on the challenges students are facing are shocking: 1 in 20 is struggling with anxiety or depression, and 1 in 5 have learning or attention issues,” says Kaufman. “With so many struggling students, frustrated families, and burned-out teachers, we know the PERC will serve a vital need in our community.”

The first PERC parent coaching event, “Data Doesn’t Define My Child”, will be Wednesday, October 2nd at 7pm on the Space of Mind campus. Led by Kaufman, this discussion will target perceptions around diagnostics, academic performance and how parents can best support their children’s development and abilities - without inducing test anxiety. Cost is $25, and details and registration can be found online at www.ccpdelray.org.
